The Green Team, a new club, held their first meeting on Oct.2 in Danielle Barcenas’ APES/Biology room to help the environment through sustainable practices.
“I know a lot of people, including myself, had a very deep passion for helping the environment,” junior and club leader Francisco Ardila said. “Vandegrift lacked a club where students are able to exercise that passion.”
Fifty-three people, primarily juniors, attended the Green Team’s first meeting, packing the science classroom from wall to wall.
“I was extremely excited,” Ardila said. “[Attendance] was double what I thought it was going to be.”
The other leaders of the club are juniors Ethan Huey and Samantha Chee. Together, the three of them detailed a plan for how to create the most impact possible on campus.
“There’s lots of energy and excitement in the leadership,” club sponsor Danielle Barcenas said. “They’re very proactive. The crowd they drew was inspiring.”
The clubs’ members have the option between a “Committee of Low Impact”, and a “Committee of High Impact”, which determines their involvement in the clubs’ projects.
“I really like the environment,” Committee of High Impact applicant Mark Weston said. “I’m a tree hugger.”
The first meeting involved introductions and a game over sustainability practices, but future meetings will entail larger activities such as service projects around the area.
“I was pleasantly surprised,” Ardila said. “So I hope we can keep on going from here.”
