National Technical Honor Society

Instead of doing homework during PIT, these students learn about quantum mechanics and augmented reality.

The National Technical Honor Society’s membership has gained members since its start in 2017. Officers like president Mia Thompson led the club’s nearly 20 members in technology-based discussions.

“In the past, although the club was active, the number of members was small and it was mostly made up of robotics students,” Thompson said. “As president, I wanted to involve more students who are more unfamiliar with the tech field.”

NTHS meets every month during PIT. During their meetings, members talk about the history of certain technologies and as well as recent developments in related fields.

NTHS was created to recruit driven students in technical areas to discover opportunities within the industry and truly find their passion in their respective interest,” Velasco said. “Additionally, NTHS allows for students to be recognized by colleges or just at Vandegrift.”

To join NTHS, students are required to maintain a 3.0 unweighted GPA and take or have currently taken a CTE class.

“I first decided to join the club during my junior year because I was interested in pursuing a [major in the] technical field,” Thompson said. “I figured that joining a club where I can be exposed to new STEM careers and learn more about future opportunities would be really helpful in deciding whether it would be something that I would enjoy.
