The cross country varsity boys and girls teams will compete at their regional meet on Monday, Oct. 23 in Corpus Christi after advancing from their district meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock on Oct. 10. Varsity boys placed second and varsity girls placed first overall, both teams securing their spot on the racing line at regionals.

“Our team has been working very hard,” sophomore varsity runner Jordan Mathis said. “You could see that pay off in the race, a lot of people got their personal record despite the last minute change in the course route.”

Old Settlers Park has been hosting cross country meets for several years. In addition to the district meet, the state meet will also be held at the park on Nov. 4.

“In order to prepare for the upcoming meet at Corpus Christi, we are upping our mileage in order to be proactive in our preparation for state,” junior Zoe Gilbert said.

The cross country team has been preparing for state since the start of their season in August.

“District was just a stepping stone on our way to the bigger meets like regionals and state,” Mathis said. “We’re doing hard workouts in anticipation of regionals and state, and focusing on getting stronger.”
