School should release students in waves

The school has had a traffic problem ever since it opened due to there only being one entrance and exit for both our school and Four Points Middle School. Since exits from the school are limited and there are several students who drive themselves, when school is released there are often backups in the parking lots and it can take from 15 to 45 minutes to even turn out onto 2222.

The school should release students in waves rather than all at once in order to reduce traffic buildups after school.

If the school allowed seniors to leave first, then juniors, and then the remaining underclassmen, all at five minute intervals, upperclassmen who drive themselves would be able to leave the school quicker and reduce traffic time for the rest of the drivers and buses. This system would allow for a steady stream of cars to exit the school without the traffic jam that would usually be created as they all tried to leave at once. The travel time for all parties involved would be reduced by a significant amount, most likely by 10 to 15 minutes.

Also, since traffic jams will be reduced by releasing students in waves, students will be more likely to walk to their car and obey traffic laws. Many students now sprint out to their cars and drive recklessly in an attempt to beat traffic out of the school. By reducing traffic, students will lose the incentive to beat their peers out of the school and many will drive safer as a result.

Some people may say that such a system would result in underclassmen, teachers, and buses still getting to their destinations at the same time as if they waited in traffic since they would have to wait for upperclassmen to leave. However, this time spent waiting for release could be used more productively by teachers and students than if they spent it in traffic. Students could use this extra time waiting for dismissal as a kind of study hall, where they could study and work on homework, and teachers could take more time to expound on their lesson. This way teachers and students are more productive while still getting home at the same time as before the change.

Overall, releasing students in waves will allow students to be more productive with their time rather than sitting in traffic and will encourage drivers to be safer when traveling home. This system will be beneficial to students and faculty alike and solve many issues that the school is currently trying to solve such as students leaving school early and running out to the parking lot.
