Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock and John Coltrane these are just some of the famous musicians that have inspired the music for Dukes Dunes first EP, Dukes Dune. Dukes Dune is a jazz trio that have been playing together for two years.

“People have come and gone,” saxophone player for Dukes Dune Patricio Dieck said. “We’ve gone through five other different members and him [Noah Colbeck] and me have been the constants these past two years.”

The band consists of three people, Colbeck and Dieck, and the band’s  bassist, Charlie Stevens, who did not appear on the EP’s cover. Colbeck and Dieck recently did a photoshoot for the EP’s cover at Bull Creek.

“I get to jam out with some A class musicians and cool dudes,” Stevens said. “I wish I could’ve been on the album cover, but I didn’t have a curta.”

Dukes Dune has five songs on it all inspired by metal, funk, afro/cuban influences and so many more but the heaviest influence is jazz.

“There’s one that’s called Caravan by Duke Ellington,” Dieck said. “And for future reference Duke Ellington is one of the greatest jazz composers and arranger to ever live, and it was made in the 50’s and we just tore it a new one.”

Colbeck and Diek practice every other day for two hours and often after school. The band also plays downtown at Gordos, on the streets during South by Southwest at and school functions such as Relay for Life and pep rallies.

“We like to play wherever we can,” Colbeck said. “As soon as we get this EP were going to send it to people and that’s how we plan to get more gigs.”

Colbeck plans to graduate and go to Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle and Dieck plans to go to University of North of Texas, both plan to study music.

“I graduate in six month,” Cobeck said. “But until then we just plan to go hard [with our music] for six months, I mean we’re both going to music school so it [music] will always be in our life.”
