‘Entwined’ by Heather Dixon

Although the days of watching Disney movies for me are over, I still enjoy a good fairytale. Entwined by Heather Dixon is a perfect grown up fairytale for teenagers that still love romance, royalty and a little bit of magic. The story is based off of the tale of the 12 dancing princesses. It follows the oldest sister, Azalea, who is forced to run the royal household after her mother dies. She tries her best to take care of her 11 younger sisters, but when they are forbidden to do the thing they love most, dance, Azalea feels that she has failed them. That is, until, she discovers a magic passage in the castle to an underground ballroom run by the mysterious Mr. Keeper. However, Mr. Keeper is not who he claims to be and soon Azalea realizes the danger she put her sisters in.
Although this story might seem a bit juvenile, it was actually quite mature and even a little dark. I enjoyed this book because each character has a distinct personality and I could find myself relating to Azalea when she struggles to balance all of her responsibilities. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Neil Gaiman, Kiera Cass or Gail Levine.
