Ceramics students craft totems representing themselves

Scoring and slipping in a repetitive fashion, students craft with precision on their made from clay.

“I have pieces that represent my past, my present, my ancestry and my future,” Senior Maria Priebe said. “This is my present. It is a submarine and it represents how I’m figuring things out right now.”

Students in Ms. Phan’s ceramics 3 class have been crafting clay totems that are supposed to represent who they are for their first project this year. Ms. Phan has been working with the students to make sure their s ideas materialize.

“The requirements for this totem project were that the students had to make sections of their totem pole represent their culture, their past or present and one that represents their future,” Phan said.

The totems present a fun challenge for the students and a chance for them to tell a story about themselves

“One thing from my past that has always been a constant is my dog,” senior Mady Ramirez said. “She really means a lot to me, she taught me a lot about animals and I want to be a so it’s a part of my future.”

When the Totems are done they’ll show the true talents of all the students of her and show light on themselves. .

” I hope the students think about where they came from, an event or people who have changed who they are and think about what they want to achieve in the future.” Phan said
