As the fall semester comes to a close it is time to recap the performances of the primary fall sports on campus. The football, cross country, volleyball, and tennis teams competed in a variety of different tournaments and games this semester from state semifinal matches to local scrimmages and games. The culmination of a school year serves as the culmination for many of these sports and a time to reflect on the work of the athletics department.
Football: The football team finished first in the district with a 8-0 district record. The team has continued to progress through the playoffs – beating Austin, Sotomayor, Steele, Harlan, and Summer Creek – and will play in the 6A D2 championship game against Southlake. The game will take place on Dec. 21 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. Currently, junior Brock Chilton leads the team in receiving yards per game averaging 64.6 Y/G and senior Columbia commit Brendan Fournier leads the team in rushing yards per game averaging 88.8 Y/G.
Cross Country: The boys and girls cross country teams both had successful seasons. The boys team finished second in the state and traveled to Portland to compete in the Nike Cross Nationals where they placed seventh as a team. The boys cross country team won both their district and regional meets and junior Kai McCullough was awarded Austin American Statesman cross country athlete of the year. The girls team also had a successful season with varsity winning districts.
Volleyball: Volleyball won their district and area championships this semester and played in the state semifinals against Stratford. Many players from the team were named First Team All-District and junior setter Ava Carrasquillo was selected to play on the 2024 UIL All-Tournament team.
Tennis: Tennis started their season by playing a variety of different teams from the Austin area including Round Rock and McNeil. The team progressed to the regional tournament where they placed second after winning the area and regional quarterfinals. The team will continue competing in tournaments next semester with games lasting until spring.
