The freshman black football team improved to 7-0 after defeating Manor 35-8 Thursday. With just three games remaining, the Vipers have allowed just 16 points on the season. Their next game is at home against Hutto Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
“I don’t think our team can get complacent, because we’ve had some really good first few games,” quarterback Austin Muchow said, “so we just got to keep on working hard.”
The team has been able to come out with a comfortable victory in all seven of their games so far with their closest opponent Dripping Springs who lost 19-0, but there are still three more teams looking to end the team’s dominant undefeated season. Games against Hutto, Westwood and Round Rock will all provide different challenges for the team to overcome. Westwood is also undefeated and looks to complete an undefeated season as well. The two teams square off on Halloween night at Westwood. There has already been some trash talk coming from the Westwood side, but the team is making sure that it doesn’t affect them.
“We really just let our game do the talking,” wide receiver Evan Guenther said. “We just go out there and dominate and use their trash talk as fuel to our fire.”
The team has been able to dominate games in any way they want to. In games against everyone but Cedar Park and Manor, the defense pitched a shutout, not allowing the opponent to score a single point. Both sides of the ball have consistently performed from week to week.
“We’re just playing as a team out there,” defensive back London Koester said. “We rally to the ball really well, and we are very physical and make the opponents scared for sure.”
Even with the defense’s success to this point, the offense has been just as successful. They have scored at least 28 points in six out of seven games and have an average of 35 points scored per game. The offense has been able to control the ball and flow of the game, and it has been incredibly effective. Quarterbacks Austin Muchow and Isaiah Mooring have split snaps at the position up to this point, but both have executed to near perfection.
“The coaches guide me through all my reads and progressions,” Muchow said, “as well as fixing and tuning any technique issues that I have.”
Despite having many injuries from key players such as receivers Owen Wright and Eiken Farley, defensive backs Preston Vandenberg and Logan McDonald, and linebacker Luke Davis, the team has been able to fight through all the adversity that has been thrown their way. They have only punted twice so far and also haven’t trailed for a single second in a single game. This includes their performance against cross-town 5A division rival Cedar Park, who they beat with a score of 49-8.
“It really doesn’t matter the size. It’s about the heart,” Koester said. “I think if you put in the work like we do in the weight room, you can handle anything out there.”
