Viper Softball Makes History
Lady Vipers Rank 1st in 6A District and Clinch Playoff Spot
April 18, 2021
For the first time in program history the Vandegrift Viper Softball team placed first in their 6A district and are moving on to the playoffs. This historic and emotional moment is incredibly meaningful to longtime members of the program.
“It is very special for me to be a part of the team that is the first in program history to make it to the playoffs, especially being a junior, and seeing how much this program has grown in the past 2 years,” junior Riley Weigelt said. “I hope that this season is able to leave a legacy on this program and generate a winning tradition in the future.”
The Lady Viper lineup ranges from freshman to seniors, and while the seniors look back on how far they’ve brought the program, the freshman are equally as excited to be a part of this year’s team.
“It’s very exciting for me and I can’t wait to see how far we go,” freshman Natalia Flores said. “Although I am a freshman, I love to see how all the girls turned it around and were able to clinch a spot in playoffs.”
With a combination of rocky previous seasons, talented seniors graduating, and COVID-19 shutdowns, all spring programs have suffered. However, Viper Softball has been able to make the most of their second chance. Their 2021 season has been full of many memorable moments: no hitters, shutouts, grand slams, and clutch comebacks included.
“The best moment in our season was our first game against Vista Ridge,” sophomore Emma Selman said. “We were all hyped up that game and really came together as a team to show them that we were a force to be reckoned with and I am excited to see what happens in the future for Vandegrift softball.”
The Lady Vipers will conclude district play with their final game against Westwood Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at home. Until then, Viper Softball has a message for Vandegrift students and sports fans alike.
“Come support your Lady Vipers as we head into the playoffs to continue making history!” said junior Taylor Dimanoff.
