Over the break, on Dec 31 the girl’s basketball team went to the Surf N Slam competition in San Diego, California. The girls received third place out of the six teams competing in their division, “Girls’ Surf division.”

“It was awesome,” senior and guard Katheryn Scott said. “Seeing all our hard-worked pay-off and showing that we are actually a good team, even [when we are] playing against teams from other states.”

Jonathan Jones, the girls head basketball coach wanted to go to a competition in Florida but heard about the competition, Surf n Slam in San Diego and decided against Florida. At Surf N Slam the girls competed with teams across the country including Washington and Oregon.

“We didn’t practice or anything [because we are required to give the girls a certain amount of days off]” Jones said. “I was expecting it to be kind of sloppy. But we played well and we played some good teams and got to play with a shot clock, which we don’t play with here in Texas and it was cool to give the girls that opportunity.”

The Surf N Slam competition chooses six all-star players for each of the five divisions in the competition. Madison Byrne was crowned as an all-star player for the “Girls’ Surf division.”

“Receiving the award was exciting,” Byrne said. “Especially because we were in an out of state tournament. Getting third overall in the tournament shows how far our team has come.”

This was the first time the basketball program had done an out of state competition. They plan to do more out of state competitions in the future.
“That is the hope,” Jones said. “You know if the district will continue to let us, then we will definitely continue to take them to more out of state competitions.”
