Tennis competes in regionals

The tennis team competed in San Antonio Thursday and Friday for Regionals and placed second.

“I am very proud of our performance this year especially considering that we were not projected to advance out of Area,” tennis coach Daniel White said. “Our district is very tough considering that we have 3 of the top 10 teams in the state.”

The competition involved a series of single and double games against the other teams, with the first team to win 10 games winning overall.

My favorite thing about tennis is definitely doubles,” senior Zach Delmonico said. “It’s a lot less stressful than playing singles. I get to do whatever I want on the court, and I get to have fun with my partner. Also, I love just bonding with my team – we’re all like a family and it’s just a really fun time all around.”

There are 6 lines of doubles, with 3 boys, 3 girls, and 3 mixed matches. There are also 6 lines of singles, with 3 boys and 3 girls matches.

“I like playing both [doubles and singles] because in doubles you have a partner so it makes it easier on you, but the challenge of being out there by yourself [in singles], figuring out what your tactics are gonna be, you’re all by yourself out there,” sophomore Nic Cusano said.

White said that the team has their strong points and weak points.

The team’s strong point is how dedicated they are to getting better,” White said. “I have players leaving after matches to go to their academy’s practices. The weak point would be that I will be losing 6 seniors next year, and 3 of them are boys in my top lineup.”

The team placed second last year in state before the school became 6A. This year they still have another state competition in the spring that focuses on individual players rather than the team competing as a whole.

My goal for the spring season is to have a player or team make it to State,” White said. “This would be a huge accomplishment for our first year in 6A and I think that we have what it takes.”
