Viper Tennis moves up to play in area

The tennis team has not lost a single district match during the year. With a total of 133 matches played, the team has in area with a second place state ranking. Varsity tennis is coached by Brad Wiske and Danielle Bevan.

With both the girls and boys team 63-0, it gives the team a total of 133-0 as their district team record.

“We have a really great team this year,” Wiske said. “I’m looking forward to see how we compete in area with all of our players.”

Team captains include seniors, who help lead the team during practices. Senior team members include Meghan O’Malley, Tyler Duncam, Tomas Colorado, Danielle Cuteri, Kyle Jacob and Andrea Stapper.

“Our team is really fun,” Duncam said. “We’re doing really well and are planning on winning area, regionals and continue on to state.”

Traveling is crucial to compete against all of the different schools in the area. It gives the team a chance to connect on and off the court.

“We are all so close and always have a good time at each match,” Duncam said. “Traveling to different tournaments is my favorite because we all go together and have fun just like a big family.”

The first district tournament began on Friday Oct. 9 against Marble Falls, where the team won 10-0 and moved on to play against Cedar Park on Oct. 13, winning against Cedar Park 10-0. The team moved on to area after a 10-0 win against Georgetown. Area consists of Vandegrift playing against Bastrop and Cedar Creek on Oct. 21-23.

“Hopefully we are going to win and continue to move on from area,” Cuteri said. “I am excited to see how we do as a team during area.”
