‘The Office’ Review
January 4, 2017
A lot of people can think work is boring, but the characters of The Office prove otherwise. After all, for The Office having your boss do things like running over a coworker in the parking lot is completely normal.
The Office takes place in Scranton, PA and follows a group of office misfits from the perspective of a film crew as they work for Dunder Mifflin, a paper company. Characters form relationships, sales associates Jim and Dwight are always pranking each other, and their boss doing something crazy is a regular occurrence.
Michael Scott, portrayed by Steve Carell, runs the office. Jim Halpert, played by John Krasinski, is a sarcastic sales representative. Dwight Schrute, played by Rainn Wilson, is the oddball of the office. Pam Beesley, played by Jenna Fischer, is the receptionist that everybody in the office knows. Toby Flenderson, played by Paul Lieberstein, is the quiet human resources representative that Michael can’t stand. Stanley Hudson, played by Leslie David Baker, is lazy but brings humor to the office. Phyllis Vance, portrayed by Phyllis Smith, marries Bob Vance across the hall from Dunder Mifflin. Kelly Kapoor, played by Mindy Kaling, is an overly confident customer service representative. Kevin Malone, portrayed by Brian Baumgartner, iis the clueless accountant put in the show for comic relief. Meredith Palmer, played by Kate Flannery, is a single mom. Creed Bratton, played by himself, is the old quality checker. Andy Bernard, played by Ed Helms, is a Cornell University alumni.
During the first season of the series, I didn’t like Michael Scott. I thought he was stubborn and inappropriate, but he made me laugh, so I decided to keep watching the show. I began to love the other people in the office. Once I got to season 2, I was hooked on Jim and Pam’s “friendship.” I love how the writers really developed the characters. The actors added to the show by making every event look real (i.e. the Pam moment at the end of season 3). I think Dwight adds to the show because he always tries to prank Jim, but fails. The pranks bring out those characters’ personalities when showing how they react.
Mostly, I enjoy watching The Office because it’s a comedic take on everyday life. It takes normal people and turns them into something extraordinary.
