It is a well-known fact that winter and summer provide some of the biggest movie releases every year, and with a summer that gave the public some amazing movies like The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man it’s a wonder what momentous movies will be released during the most wonderful time of the year. Here is a guide to what you should see this winter break.
Rise of the Guardians
marked the release of the first Christmas movie of the season, and it is such a well thought idea that kids will be sure to love. The story features a Russian Santa Clause (Alec Baldwin), an Australian Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and a silent Sandman as they team together defeat the evil spirit, Pitch (played by Sherlock Holmes’s Jude Law) but they cannot defeat him without the help of the young, funny and slightly juvenile Jack Frost (played by Star Trek’s Chris Pine.) This movie looks like it is sure to be a ton of fun for kids, teens and adults.
Playing for Keeps
When it comes to romantic comedies Gerard Butler is no amateur, having done movies like P.S I Love You and The Bounty Hunter. Now he is adding another movie to his rom-com collection, Playing for Keeps. Butler stars as a former soccer star that has fallen on hard times and begins to coach his son’s soccer team in an attempt to get his life back together. When an opportunity to get his life back together as a sports castor for his beloved sport on ESPN arises, he may have to face a choice between the love of his life and his son or the sport from his glory days. The movie also stars Jessica Biel, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid.
The Hobbit:
An Unexpected Journey
It has been nine years since The Lord of the Rings trilogy finished up and now Peter Jackson, as well as some other familiar faces from the previous films, are back to give movie goers a three part prequel adaption of J.R.R Tolkien’s 1937 hit novel The Hobbit. The story follows a curious Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (uncle to previous films protagonist Frodo), as he journey’s to the Lonely Mountain with a vigorous group of Dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen from them by the dragon Smaug. The film will have actors reprising their roles from previous films including Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Elrond (Hugo Weaving), Frodo (Elijah Wood), Gollum (Andy Serkis) and many more. The movie also stars T.V show Sherlock’s stars Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch. The movie is sure to be tons of fun. Will you take the journey to Middle Earth in 2D or 3D?
Les Misérables
The French historical novel that has been adapted to a musical has now been adapted to a feature film. The movie is set in 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever. The movie stars many huge actors including Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Boron Cohen.
