As Valentine’s Day begins to approach, it’s time to start thinking about the gift you plan to give your special someone. While the holiday isn’t about what you give or receive, there’s no better way to show someone that you care than with a meaningful gift that they will remember forever.
The Classics
For women especially, it’s pretty hard to go wrong with the old fashioned heart-shaped box of chocolates and a perky bouquet of red roses andbaby’s breath. Chocolate-covered strawberries are another Valentine’s Day favorite for all genders. Whether store-bought or homemade, these treats are the perfect indulgence that always satisfy the occasion. Additional ways to win the heart of your valentine include their favorite candies (Sweethearts are a classic), heartshaped jewelry (Claire’s always has a reasonably priced and cute selection), or a teddy bear.
Actions that Speak Louder than Words
Quality time spent with your partner (or friends!) Valentine’s Day is an essential part of the holiday. Despite what you could possibly give or receive, the best gift is the warm presence of your loved one. However, there are many things you could do to brighten your time together. Cooking a meal is always a romantic gesture or activity if done together. The affectionate nature of cooking will always be something that tugs at the heartstrings. Another lovely way to create a memory together is to go see a movie with your valentine. While this may not be as romantic as cooking, you’re sure to remember Valentine’s Day when you saw “Captain America: Brave New World” together. If you’re looking for something a bit more specific and thoughtful, an additional way to rekindle the magic of love is to recreate your first date. Go back to that same restaurant, to the same booth where you shared those first endearing moments of awkwardness.
Go-To Gift Baskets
These have become increasingly popular in recent years, and serve as perfect Valentine’s Day gifts that are easy and considerate. While some do come pre made, handpicked ones add a personalized touch. Some universal gift basket stuffers include: snacks, candy, stuffed animals, mugs, candles and self care products (bubble baths, bath bombs, lotion, etc.)
Heartfelt Hand-mades
Although Valentine’s Day has grown to become one of the most commercial American holidays, the most thoughtful and charming gifts remain those that are handmade with a special someone in mind. Baking is a quick and simple way to personalize and make your own gift (bonus points if you make something heartshaped). With today’s access to thousands of recipes at the click of a button, all it takes is a few scrolls to learn how to make soft and chewy sugar cookies, adorable cake pops, or anything else your valentine may prefer. Another thing you could make yourself (although it may be a bit cheesy) is a “Happy Valentine’s Day” banner. These are also pretty easy to make, and would be such an endearing way to set the scene for giftgiving or spending time together. Crafts are always a good way to go in terms of gifts, even if you aren’t the most creative person. There are many tutorials and ideas online; it really only takes a few minutes of scrolling. Some ideas that are always appreciated are paper or ribbon flowers (though this may take some time), handmade bracelets (Micheals and Hobby Lobby have all the supplies you need, including a wide selection of high-quality beads), things made of air-dried clay, paintings or jars full of reasons why you love someone. Last but certainly not least, handmade cards always add a special touch to your gift. Again, the internet is rampant with inspiration and millions of ideas, so I would recommend looking on Pinterest or Youtube. Even if art isn’t your forte, people really appreciate the effort and time put into a home-made card.
Although gifts are an exciting part of the holiday, the truth is that effort and consideration are what mean the most to people. Even if you are unable to buy anything expensive or make an elaborate craft, any gesture to show that you care will be appreciated on Valentine’s Day.
