Austin is arguably the best during the autumn months. From October to December this city in the heart of Texas straddles the line between briskly cool and uncomfortably warm. Not only are the temperatures stunning, but as November starts to hit the leaves turn beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow. Most people don’t associate autumn foliage with Austin, Texas, but they would be wrong. This will be my fourth fall in Austin and although it still is abnormal to experience Texas heat during non-summer months, fall is my favorite time of year.
Grab a seasonal drink:
The pumpkin spice latte popularized by Starbucks is decadent and perfectly seasonal. Every late August I rush to Starbucks to get my fill. But my favorite Austin specific autumnal latte is from Swedish Hill on 6th street. Recently, the Austin deli and bakeshop transitioned into a smaller version dubbed Little Swedish Hill. The smaller joint only features outdoor seating which isn’t for the faint of heart in the summer, but is pleasant as the temperatures drop. My Saturday ritual involves grabbing a latte with almond milk and fall spice, the perfect caffeinated treat.
Go for a scenic walk:
As the leaves begin to turn the entire city gets more beautiful. The best scenic walk in my opinion is on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake, which is especially enjoyable during the cooler moments of fall. Austin features changing foliage and non-extreme temperatures which makes for an amazing walk. The trail is lively on a weekend morning and a must visit this autumn in Austin. Additionally, there are many beautiful walking spots in Riverplace and Steiner Ranch closer to campus that are perfect for when you’re in need of a new way to spend your mornings, afternoons, or evenings.
Get a pumpkin:
As a northerner, I was skeptical about the quantity and variety of farms and pumpkin patches down south. To me – a quintessential fall involves apple picking, warm cider, and picking a distorted pumpkin up from a local patch. However, there are many perfect places to get your pumpkin this fall. The Round Rock Pumpkin Festival and Pumpkin Patch is open daily (except Tuesdays) this October and features a variety of different activities and animals. Part of the proceeds go to the Williamson County Animal Shelter.
Visit the zoo:
The Austin Zoo features a Boo in the Zoo event that takes place every Saturday and Sunday evening in October. During this event you can go and see the different nocturnal animals. Additionally, there is a haunted house and spooky train ride that is extremely fitting for the halloween season. Personally, Halloween is my least favorite holiday, but for those drawn to the spookier elements the zoo is also decorated. People young and old can appreciate the zoo and enjoy their time at this festive fall theme night.
Have a lay in:
There is nothing wrong with having a relaxing lie in at home, especially during fall. Autumn is a cozy time and sometimes the best activity is just to put on a movie, bake a new sweet treat, and relax. One particular recipe that I have been wanting to try are the Taylor Swift chai cookies. Maybe this fall I will finally master my baking skills or learn how to knit. Staying in is oftentimes more fun than going out and is a fun activity during any season.
