Summer Read 4 All
April 12, 2017
The #SR4A book drive started on April 1 and will continue until April 16. The #SR4A is a district wide book drive for all students K-12. Vandegrift’s day to host the book drive at the Barnes and Noble off of highway 183 is April 13. They start hosting at 6 and it ends at 8, but sales online or in-store will be captured until April 16.
“I feel like everyone benefits from the book drive,” Instructional coach Sheri Westbrook said. “Even if the school received donated books that are not age appropriate we can still give the books to Half-Price Books and use the money we get to buy age appropriate books.”
Research has found that students reading scores drop between the end of one school year to the beginning of another. #SR4A stands for Summer Read 4 All, which is a book drive that collects books for students to read over the summer.
“I think it is really great that we can give book to kids over the summer,” Librarian assistant Danielle Sullivan said. “Especially if they don’t have access to books.”
The clubs that are helping host this Thursday are Robotics, Key Club, PALS, International Club etc.
“I think it is a really fun way to interact with our community,” president of International club Sophia Froehlich said. “It also brings a lot of Vandegrift clubs together and it will just be a overall good time.”
Students will also be performing and holding different special events such as face and nail painting, read alouds and a number of bands.
“For me, I have been drumming for eight years,” Senior and performer Karl —– said. “And I’ve also been to a lot of gigs so I’m not nervous, I’m just excited.”
