Senior Summit helps students prepare for college
October 20, 2016
Yesterday the senior summit went on while 9th-11th grade students took the PSAT. Seniors had the opportunity to personalize their time and go to different college workshops. The sessions were in in building 2 and parts of building 1.
“We are always needing to give seniors extra attention because of college applications, their future plans, the fact that they don’t have much longer here at high school,” college and career counselor Sarah Spradling said. “We established the senior summit based around things they have historically needed.”
Many seniors took advantage of this time to get help with college applications and learn new skills.
“It gives you options to explore these things that you don’t know,” senior Jared Akins said. “Understand financial aid, work on stuff that you didn’t have time to work on, learn about things that you might not learn about in our classes.”
Guest speakers were invited to talk about things like resumes and managing personal finances. Counselors also talked about topics such as college applications, scholarships, and being test ready. Senior Ashley Chase attended the FAFSA class, the college preparation class, a resume preparation class, and interviewing 101.
“I chose these classes based on how much based on how much progress I had made in my application,” Chase said. “I hadn’t done the FAFSA yet and my college applications opened up this week so I put aside some time to work on those.”
Chase said that she enjoyed the classes she attended.
“I liked the senior summit because there was a lot of individual freedom for the seniors to work on what they most needed to get done,” Chase said. “The senior summit was tailored to help each student on an individual level, making it helpful and efficient.”
Students were able to benefit from using this time through the tips from the counselors and guest speakers.
“I think that students can not only get help to make a good application and get forms filled out, but can also get a glimpse of what college will be like,” Chase said. “Even for seniors who have already completed their college applications, the summit helped prepare them to present themselves professionally in the adult working world.”
