Every fall Saturday you can find a Vandegrift student volunteering at the Town and Country Miracle League Field, helping children with disabilities play baseball.
“Miracle League is always the highlight of my week,” senior Nikita Batra said. “Volunteers get to help kids play a sport they normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to do and it’s such an enriching experience.”
Miracle League is a non-profit organization that started in Austin 11 years ago and has been hosting baseball games for children with disabilities every fall and spring. Miracle League gives children of all ages a chance to play America’s favorite pastime.
“Baseball is a game that everyone knows how to play,” senior Maddy Peacock said. “So it’s very cool that we get the time to teach kids that aren’t normally able to play baseball, the way of the game.”
Miracle League allows for the children to interact with volunteers and play baseball. Miracle League simulates Major League Baseball by naming their different teams the names of MLB teams.
“There are the White Sox, Rangers, Yankees, and so many more,” junior Julianne Glover said. “I’m on the Cubs. But no matter what team you’re on, you always know that you are making a difference every time you go to Miracle League.”
Many students from different high school’s and middle school’s volunteer for this organization. These students come together from a wide range of community’s and work together to put the needs of underprivileged kids before them.
“Its such an enlightening experience,” junior Emma Spasaro said. “It changes your perspective on life and I totally recommend that everyone takes a chance and volunteers because it is worth it.”
