The Vandegrift Band won first in overall class, out of Class 2A, winning Outstanding Music Performance, Outstanding Visual Performance and Outstanding General Effect.
The band and Vision dancers rode a 4-hour bus ride to Denton, Texas at the UNT Apogee Stadium. Much time and effort were spent in preparation for competition.
“We had long hours of practice,” junior drum major Lienne Ng said.
During their performance at 3:45p.m., on Saturday, the rain poured hard on the VHS Band and Vision dancers.
Some viewed the change in the weather in an optimistic light.
“I think it positively impacted our performance,” senior drum major Emily Schmitz said. We went into it with a positive attitude. We had fun with it.”
In the interest of the safety of participants and the audience, finals were canceled. Preliminary scores were instead used to determine the rankings and awards of the competing bands.
“It was raining, but it was exciting,” sophomore Hayden Mason said. “I’ve never done a contest in the rain before,”
They placed sixth out of all of the bands, including the 4A bands that competed on Saturday.
“I feel like we did really well and even with finals being canceled for weather,” said junior Amulya Angajala. “It was fun competing at BOA.”
