October is finally here and with it comes a very exciting time for the students, staff, and parents. Not only is it time to grab your pumpkin from a pumpkin patch but it’s also time to break out your favorite dancing shoes and supplies for your mums and garters because it’s time for homecoming. The dance, game, parade and spirit days are all coming up. The game against the Rouse Raiders and the casual homecoming dance are going to be on Friday October 28 and the parade will take place on Wednesday, October 26. The dance will be held in the courtyard and tickets are $5 if you buy before the game and $8 at the door. Homecoming court nominations start on October 17.
How are students feeling about homecoming? Seniors Jasmine Mobley, Kaley Sheridan and sophomore Hannah Collins all agree that participating in Homecoming events is important.
“I am going to the game, parade and making mums with my friends. I’m excited for the game because Homecoming is special, everyone will be there and the king and queen will be announced,” Sheridan said.
Even math teacher Mr. Conner agrees that homecoming is worth going to.
“Why not go? Homecoming is fun,” Mr. Conner said.
Some students, however, don’t agree that the Homecoming dance is all that great. Sophomore Mason Everett doesn’t think that homecoming is worth it.
“I’m definitely not going to the Homecoming dance this year. It’s not formal, it’s after the game, and last year they kept the lights on and patrolled us like we’re in middle school,” Everett said.
All students who are going to the Homecoming dance can all agree that a lot of preparation goes into it; senior Parker Brigance has already started preparing.
“I’m working out, tanning three times a day, stretching and doing yoga,” Brigance said.
Senior Gabby Arevalo plans out her preparation weeks in advance. She has friends come over to get ready before the game.
“We pull out the straighteners and curling irons and just have fun with it. Even though the dance is casual you still want to look good,” Arevalo said.
In preparation for the game and dance students are also buying mums and garters for themselves, their dates and their friends. Mums and garters are being sold by the legacies. You can buy actual mums or you can get the supplies and assemble them yourself. Mums range in price from $20 for the 6” mum to $3 for finger mums. You can also buy trinkets and stickers for your mum pricing from the $4 bear to the $0.25 stickers. Assembly fees are $10 for the large mum and $5 for the small mum and garter mum.
The Legacies will begin selling mums in the cafeteria on Tuesday the 11 and Wednesday the 12from 3:45-6:00 pm, Saturday the 15from 12:00-4:00 pm, Monday the 17 and Wednesday the 19from 3:45-7:30 pm, Saturday the22 from 12:00-4:430 pm, Monday the 24and Wednesday the 26from 3:45-7:30 pm. If you have questions, you can contact Robyn Martinez at [email protected].
Even if you’re not going to the dance, you can still participate in all of the other activities that come along with the annual Homecoming week. Students in sports, clubs and other school activities will be on floats passing out candy during the homecoming parade on Wednesday the 26. The parade will also feature the Homecoming nominees leading the parade in cars donated by Viper parents.
“Homecoming let’s people come together as a school and show how we have school spirit,” freshman Madison Collins said.
The parade will be held at 7:00 P.M and the pep rally will begin at 7:30. To sign up for the parade, please contact Phyllis Boddorf at [email protected] or visit the school website at http://vhs.leanderisd.org.

No matter how you feel about Homecoming, it is part of high school tradition. Homecoming was the very first dance that the school has had, and will be there until the school closes. Next year will be the true homecoming because our first group of seniors will have graduated already. Although we don’t have people coming back this year, it’s still a fun time for students to get together.
“Homecoming is important because it shows how much people care about our school and we get to dress up during spirit week. It’s important for everyone to participate in these events because homecoming week really brings the school together,” Junior Jackeyy Sadler said.
